Sunday Potager (Food Garden) Ramblings #81
A curving garden bed.
A dwarf pine and some leafless shrubs in a bed of snow.

Well, we have had a week, you all! We went from double digit, short sleeve days, back to full on winter. On Monday, I was out edging my garden beds in a t-shirt, by Friday we were back to winter coats. Check on your prairie friends, you guys, we are not okay, lol.

Next week will be back to t-shirt weather though, gardens nicely watered (hah) and I will finally get my onions, peas, sweet peas, and spinach planted out.

A rusty galvanized watering can, some green plants in a box, and an enamel bowl of potting soil with some compost on top.
I was washing the steps and working on filling my pots just a few days ago.

I have flowers coming in 1.5 weeks, so am working on filling the pots with fresh potting soil. I use a blend of 5 parts good quality potting soil (Sunshine#4 or ProMix HP) and add two to three parts compost or bagged manure (chicken, sheep, steer). Mix those up well and fill your pots and hanging baskets.

A thriving window box full of white and pink flowers sitting on a green porch railing. Rusty garden forks stand in front of the railing.
My shade window boxes last summer.

This will feed your plants nicely to start, but you will need to fertilise every week or two in summer to keep them blooming and thriving.

Terracotta pots on a limestone patio.
I absolutely love terracotta pots. They give that feel of an English garden, plus plants thrive as the pots breathe.

A brick firepit in a yard of green grass, with foldable chairs around it.
What a great firepit!
Three ice cream cones in a wooden ice cream cone holder sit on the table in front of some flowers and stacks of ice cream cones.

The Best Ice Cream Bar Ideas – This would be a lovely idea for a birthday party or other family get together… assuming we ever get summer ; )

A green goddess salad with shrimp.
Lemon sugar cookies on a mauve tabletop.
A small dog pulling a very large piece of rope with knots tied in it.
A very dirty and shaggy looking Emmy Bean.

Hang in there! Spring is coming…. I hope. Have a great Sunday ~ Tanja
