Sunday Potager Ramblings #48
A large orange moon rises low in the sky, partially obscured by tall grasses silhouetted against the fading light.

I’ve been checking out the moon the last few nights. It has been stunning! Big, orange, low in the sky. Still beautiful in the morning, too. Apparently this is called the ‘Corn Moon’ as it coincides with the corn harvest.

A vibrant garden filled with a variety of blooming flowers, including zinnias, sunflowers, and other colorful plants, surrounded by a wooden fence and green grass.
Not to worry, I still have loads of flowers for the bees.

I have started my fall garden clean up for the year. Some say it’s too early, but we literally have so much to do in the fall, that we have to start when frost is being talked about in the area.

Some of you may be ready to do clean up just because you are over it. Over the watering, the deadheading, the fussing. Ready for fall decor, pumpkin lattes, sweaters and hoodies, and mums on the stoop.

Whichever way you roll, I just want you to know that it is fine. It is okay to be done with it.

  • Start with pot and basket emptying so you can get them into the shed to prevent cracking or breaking your pots.
  • Repot any geraniums that you want to keep over, repot.
  • Leave your dahlias till they get a light frost. Harvest seeds, if you are going to do seed dahlias. Keep the tubers in a cardboard box in your cold room, furnace room, or heated garage. Take cuttings and plant them up to place in a bright window indoors. Take lots as some will die.
  • Keep watering your trees, shrubs, perennials till ground freeze up.
  • Buy trees, shrubs, and perennials at the end of season sales. Plant them up now.
  • Pick tomatoes.
  • Pick potatoes.
  • Harvest herbs and hang to dry, or freeze.
  • Save seeds from marigolds, calendula, zinnias, cosmos, dahlias.
  • Keep weeding.

A vibrant garden scene featuring large potted canna lilies and smaller flower pots surrounded by lush greenery and a wooden fence in the background.

From this to this… just the canna and the rose are being kept over. The mini rose will go into the garden, the canna will be divided and placed in the cold room for the winter.

Gardening Inspo!

A scenic garden pathway surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage and diverse plants, with a rustic structure in the background.
A charming garden shed surrounded by lush greenery and colorful flower pots, featuring a welcoming door and decorative wreath on the front.
Though my shed looks fancy on the outside and the little porch is handy, the inside is very basic. Plywood, shelves, pegboard… nothing worth showing off ; )

Gardening How-To’s

Fall Decorating Ideas & Diy’s

Colorful decorative wooden mushrooms arranged on a table.

Make a super cute, easy diy rustic mushroom wreath with dollar store items. For these wooden mushrooms here or this package of assorted sizes of mushrooms and make the wreath, plus these Christmas tree ornaments for gifting, or your own decor.

Recipes & Foodie Inspo!

A plate of pumpkin donuts, two iced with white glaze and topped with walnuts, alongside several plain pumpkin donuts, with a jar of milk in the background.

I cannot wait to make these baked pumpkin donuts. If you love cake donuts, this donut pan is perfect. I have had one for several years now, for ‘healthier’ donuts. I also love these baked apple donuts with cinnamon sugar.

Savoury Recipes…

The best non-alcoholic rosé wines to go with your charcuterie boards or that lovely tomato tart.

Check out how crazy tall those marigolds are, eh? You can hardly see the tomatoes!
