How To Stay Cool This Summer & Get A Good Night’s Sleep, Too

Summer is finally here and some parts of the country are already in a heat wave. We had our first uncomfortable night last night, after a day that hit 32 degrees. We were unprepared. Not so any longer!

Here are some tips to stay cool this summer…

A ceiling fan is almost a must. I know that they are considered ugly by designers, but you all… maybe they are rich enough to have air conditioning everywhere.

If you run your ceiling fan counter clockwise, it will push the air down, sending a cool breeze your way.

We have a great big one in our bedroom. It was the only one that we could find in a colour that would go with our bedroom, and with a light that I do not hate. Some of them really are ugly, lol. Anyway… I love my big ceiling fan and think it looks fantastic.

Air Conditioners. I am not a huge fan of canned freezing cold air, but I feel for our really fluffy dog (a St Bernard) when the temps soar, so have been looking at these portable mini air conditioners. I have not yet tried them but these ones get rave reviews.

3 piece light bedding – warm in winter, cool in summer.

Start with your bedding, and it makes a massive difference in how cool you feel at night. Look for…

  • Cotton or linen sheets – they breathe, wick away moisture.
  • Lighter coloured, pale shades reflect heat instead of absorbing it.
  • A summer-weight quilt or blanket – A lightweight quilt can provide sufficient coverage without trapping excessive heat.

You know that feeling when you crawl into bed and the sheets feel hot before you’ve even pulled them up? Cooling your bed before bedtime can change that.

  • Place your top sheet in the freezer for 15 minutes before bed (first, put it in a plastic bag).
  • Use a cooling gel pillow to keep your head and neck cool.
  • If you have a memory foam or thicker mattress that tends to retain heat, consider cooling mattress toppers with breathable or gel technology.

Sometimes it’s not just the room that needs cooling down—you might, too. Try adding a few calming, cooling rituals to your summer evenings.

  • Take a lukewarm shower before bed to lower your core temperature. This is easy and makes you feel so fresh and cool.
  • Use a cooling body spray or spritz your pillow with a lavender linen spray.
  • Sip a glass of cold water while reading a book or journaling.

This helps signal your body that it’s time to wind down, even if the sun hasn’t yet set. It might sound over-the-top, but small cooling tricks like these make a big difference when temperatures climb.

Nothing better than a coconut milk iced latte on a hot day… especially if it is in a sexy ribbed glass.

  • Close the curtains, blinds, drapes everywhere.
  • Get room darkening curtains.
  • Open windows in the mornings to let in the cool air. Close for the daytime. Open again in evening.
  • Run the furnace fan to help bring that cool air up from the basement.
  • Place a bowl of ice in front of the portable fan.
  • Stay hydrated, wear a hat if working outside. Take a nap in the afternoon, stay out of the sun, if possible.
  • Cook on the Barbeque, use the sun to dry your clothes, try not to use too many electronics or appliances as they heat up the house. Eat out in an air conditioned restaurant ; )
