5 Easy Steps to Creating Your Perfect Potager
Cosmos growing in the potager to attract and feed pollinators.

Creating a potager garden can seem overwhelming when first starting out, but it’s easily achievable with these simple steps.

  1. First, envision your garden’s design – think beyond straight lines and allow creative shapes to guide your plot, using curves and patterns. Potager gardens are visually appealing, as well as productive.
  2. Step two involves selecting a diverse range of plants. Mix colorful lettuce, bright chard, and fragrant herbs like basil and lavender. The key is variety – choose plants that mature at different times for a continuous harvest.
  3. Next, prepare your soil. Enhance it with compost to provide a nutrient-rich bed for your plants – this step is absolutely essential for a healthy potager.
  4. In step four, plant your chosen varieties with aesthetic and practicality in mind. Consider plant heights, colors, and bloom times. Use companion planting to naturally ward off pests and improve growth.
  5. Finally, maintain your garden. Water, weed, and prune as required, and appreciate the gradual fruition of your efforts – an abundant, flourishing potager that feeds both body and soul.
